This is a podcast about the sense of touch in choreographic practice. We’ll be thinking both about how approaching performance from the vantage point of tactility reveals artistic possibilities AND how artistic practice can help us think about touch differently, undoing some of our tacit assumptions about it. We’ll be hearing from artists in different fields, bearing witness to different approaches, vocabularies and concerns. Along the way, we’ll touch on the wide array of problems, concepts, and possibilities that the haptic gathers together and opens out onto, including consent, visuality, synaesthesia, and spectatorship.

This podcast is about giving space to artistic thinking and practices which have been made private, invisible, inaudible, or inaccessible during the COVID-19 pandemic, not only to render them public but also provide a space for continuing to dialogue and think together. In other words, we want to make tangible, through the medium of sound, the artistic practices and thinking which are both uniquely relevant and uniquely difficult in the current moment, during which anxieties about touch, interdependence, infection and proximity are at a peak.

We’ll ask artists to share anecdotes, insights, and useful concepts, as well as references, scores, and sounds.

This podcast is part of Vera Tussing’s tactile cycle and current research towards a publication in 2022-2023. It’s being created and produced in collaboration with Sebastian Kann and Mike Picknett.
